Adolescent Gynecology

Adolescence marks a time of transition from childhood to adulthood and encompasses many psychological and physical milestones. A gynecologist can serve as a trusted guide to lead a teenager from adolescence through adulthood. Many young women have special needs and concerns about changes in their bodies. Anchorage Women’s Clinic welcomes your adolescent daughters to our practice so we can provide the kind of one-on-one care young women want in an atmosphere that allows them to feel comfortable talking about their health and lifestyles.

AWC offers a unique service for girls entering adolescence–the time of transition from childhood to adulthood. We have put together a special visit known as “My first GYN visit” for girls age 12 and older. She will meet with a nurse practitioner, counselor and has the option of receiving her first of three Gardasil vaccinations.

The nurse practitioner will provide a physical exam (an internal exam will only be given if the girl is sexually active) and talk with her about her health and lifestyle choices. Next she will meet with our on-site counselor to talk about issues she may be facing or could face in the future such as healthy body image, healthy eating, friendships, communication and self esteem.

We have the ability to do many procedures on-site in our recently expanded facility and have several physicians who are robotic surgery specialists. If the procedure cannot be done in our office, most of our providers have privileges at Providence Hospital, Alaska Regional Hospital and the Alaska Surgery Center.

Biopsy

Biopsy is the removal for diagnostic study of a piece of tissue from a living body for diagnostic evaluation. Several types include the Vulvar and Endometrial.

Colposcopy

This procedure allows your provider to see a magnified view of your cervix using a lighted microscope and is performed to determine the cause of an abnormal pap smear. Often at this appointment, a biopsy is taken of the tissue in question.

Cryotherapy

This procedure freezes abnormal tissue and in most instances, normal tissue grows back in its place. It is used to treat problems in the cervix when a pap smear or a colposcopy procedure comes back abnormal.

Fetal Monitoring

If an expectant mother has not felt her baby move for a while, or for other specified reasons, it may be recommended to place a monitor around her belly. This monitor measures her contractions to the baby’s heart rate and beats per minute. It usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on baby’s activity.

Genital Wart Removal

Genital warts can be removed by excision, cryotherapy or by topical wart treatment.

Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)

Your provider uses an electrified loop of wire to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix. This procedure may be recommended following an abnormal pap test.

Nuchal Translucency

This elective test is done in the first trimester of pregnancy. It combines a maternal blood test with an ultrasound measurement and identifies fetuses at increased risk of Down Syndrome, Trisomy –18 or –13.

Urodynamics

Dr. Kim specializes in Urodynamics at AWC. He offers an outpatient procedure called the mid-urethral sling. Dr. Kim positions a narrow strip of material, or sling, around the urethra to support its natural tissues. The implanted sling acts like a hammock providing extra support to the urethra to prevent accidental urine leakage. Results may be noticed immediately.
